The Cleveland Browns are 6-4 and are contending for a playoff spot for the first time since 2002. Yet, much of the discussion about the team these days has to do with who will play quarterback for the team in 2008, the incumbent, Derek Anderson or rookie Brady Quinn. When you come to think of it, this is what Cleveland sports is all about. We can’t be satisfied even if our teams are winning.
As WKNR’s Greg Brinda has been saying lately, "Are you worried about what you are going to have for dinner on February 6th?" The point is the Browns are in contention for the playoffs, why worry about what is going to happen next season? It seems foolish and it is. All sorts of things can occur between now and September 2008, when the brown and orange kick off another season. Anderson could get hurt, he could play horribly down the stretch of this season, the Browns could get to the Super Bowl, any of these things would affect the coaching staff’s decision.
Seriously, why would you bench a signal caller who took you to the playoffs? If the team goes 10-6 this year, Anderson has to go into camp as the starter. We know what the former Oregon State QB can do, Quinn has yet to take a snap in the regular season. Phil Savage gets paid a lot of money to evaluate talent. If he thinks Quinn is better, then Anderson can be traded and Cleveland would be compensated with at least two high draft picks. But, let’s see what happens in the last six games of this season.
We do the same thing with our other teams. As the Tribe was marching to the playoffs this season, several people would ask about the possibility of trading potential free agent C.C. Sabathia. If the Indians decided to deal the big lefty, you would never get equal talent in return, and since the ballclub missed the World Series by one game in 2007, why wouldn’t you take the chance to get back to that point in ’08. Since C.C. didn’t have a good post season, there are people who want to trade him because he doesn’t come through in the clutch. However, without him, the Tribe doesn’t make the playoffs.
As the Cavaliers were making their run to The NBA Finals, we were worried about how many more years LeBron James was under contract. James is still contractually obligated to play for the wine and gold for at least three more seasons. That is an eon in today’s sports world. In 2004, who even thought the Cavs could get to The Finals? Seattle’s Kevin Durant was a high school junior. Something or somebody could easily burst on the scene by that time, and the wine and gold could be celebrating a world title after the 2009-10 season. Do you think the King would leave a champion?
It’s kind of a sickness, really. We can’t just enjoy the moment. I can understand if we were suffering through losing seasons from the Indians, Browns, and Cavaliers, but we are not. Give thanks for the success we have enjoyed this year, and keep the normal Cleveland sports angst in our pockets at least until next season starts for our teams.
